Great Sound... Great Guitar Jun 17, 2010
By S. Buckley First off... I'm not a great guitar player and don't know everything about guitars.
With that said, I really like this guitar. The sound is amazing and the craftmanship is fantastic. For my birthday I received Takamine G Series 340C Acoustic-Electric Guitar which my family had purchased from Long and McCuade (In canada). I went up there to see if they would price match amazons price of 275 for it and they told me that was below their cost... so I returned the guitar and went to buy it on amazon. (I loved the sound of the guitar as well... but the 340SC does sound much nicer). I decided to upgrade to the 340SC model since it was very cheap on amazon as well 327(still below orginal purchase price of the 340C). Long story short... I would recommend both guitars but for $50 difference the 340SC was an easy choice.
I like the gold tuners but they might not be for everyone. They seem to be holding the tune very well. The rosewood, spruc and mahogany is very sharp looking all with really nice grain lines. I really like the abalone dot inlays and the abalone rosette. One difference visually between the 340C and the 340SC is the the top bind stripe (around the edge of the spruce ... on top), for the 340C it was abalone while the 340SC is 3 alternating black and white lines... ~1/8" thick.
I love the built in tuner. Works like a charm... it simply displays a letter for the chord it hears with either a ^ or v to indicate to tune up or down... when in tune they both appear. Since it shows a letter for the chord I found it quite useful in remembering bar chord positions. I have not pluged into an amp yet and tested out the equilizer. It has a low battery light... and the screen is easy to see even in the dark or bright lights.
I also purchased Guardian Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Case (Fiberglass, Dark Grey) and the guitar fits perfectly into the case.
I am planning on taking the guitar to a technician for a proper setup since the 340C came with a smaller amount of play between the strings and the frets than the 340SC.
I was very worried about purchasing a guitar on amazon but it was all for nothing. Shipping was fantastic, signature required. It was shipped in the orginal guitar box placed into another over sized box filled with shipping peanuts (a full big garbage bag full). I purchased it from Gear 1 Music.
Overall for the price I paid I could not be any happier with this guitar. I hope this helps... if not check out this YouTube Review: [...]

Good Workmanship. Good Learning or Traveling Guitar. Mar 31, 2011
By Cypherdude July 25 UPDATE: I have had my Takamine EG340SC for 4 months now and have solved all of the problems with it. I replaced the TP4T preamp unit, the broken "G" string, and the dead 9 volt battery. I attached a self-stick felt pad to eliminate the TP4T battery cover and LED cover vibrations (see below and my pics). I have since purchased the eMedia Guitar Method v5 software and other materials such as All About Guitar: A Fun and Simple Guide to Playing Guitar. Using a Monster AI STUDIOLINK 1/4-Inch Mono Female to 1/8-Inch Stereo Male Instrument Interconnect Cable and a Hosa 10FT Guitar Cable Strght To Rght Angl, I am able to connect the EG340SC to my laptop or desktop. I have enjoyed practicing with the guitar using the software as a learning tool. I hope to relearn the guitar and become as good as I was a long time ago. I also purchased a Guardian Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Case (Fiberglass, Dark Grey) which I highly recommend. Although I do have the Korg TM-40 tuner, see below, I usually use the onboard TP4T tuner because it's quicker and simpler than to break out the Korg and set it up.
This is my third rewrite. Initially, because of the TP4T problems, I gave it 2 stars, then I gave it 3 stars. I still would not recommend the EG340SC for a professional. However, as a learning or traveling guitar, I have changed my rating to 4 stars. See my pic's in the picture section for this product.
PRO's: Attractive, glossy finish, cutaway guitar. Relatively inexpensive, relatively good sound projection. Built-in TP4T tuner works WHEN GIVEN CORRECT USER INSTRUCTIONS (see below and my pics).
CON's: Some vibration with the TP4T tuner battery cover and the LED cover against the TP4T body, especially when plucking the A, #5, string, which can be remedied with a 1mm thick self-stick felt pad (see below and my pics). TP4T pre-amp can give low frequency speaker distortion if gain is more than 40% under certain circumstances. TP4T tuner slightly less accurate than Korg turners with LCD screens. Some fret buzz can occur, especially with the D, #4, string if plucked too hard.
CONCLUSIONS: The Takamine EG340SC Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar is a good learning guitar. It is not intended for professionals and the TP4T is not good enough for this purpose. I went through some trouble to keep my guitar (see below). If given another chance, I would have returned it. If I were to lose this guitar, I would purchase a Yamaha FGX730SC Acoustic Electric Guitar, glossy Natural, an Epiphone DR-500M Masterbilt Acoustic Guitar, Natural Satin because satin finishes are said to have better projection, or an Epiphone DR-500R Masterbilt Acoustic Guitar, Dreadnought, Natural Satin because it has solid Rosewood back and sides. If you are a student and can find the EG340SC for around three fifty buy it. If you can't, I recommend you purchase a non-preamp Yamaha FG730S Acoustic Guitar, Natural instead. Be sure to purchase either the Korg TM-40 Large Display Digital Tuner and Metronome or the Snark SN-1 Tuner. Both tuners are easy to use and have many positive reviews.
==========
IN DEPTH: The workmanship on the Takamine EG340SC Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar is good. I see no problems with any of the wooden parts or the finish and I am very particular. I used a voltmeter on the included, Chinese-made Emegaton "extra heavy-duty", 9 volt battery and discovered it was dead, measuring at 1 volt. I replaced it with a new 9 volt Rayovac alkaline battery which tested OK. The TP4T preamp part did work, however the tuner part was totally DEAD. I called Takamine's customer service at KMC Music, (860) 509-8888. Initially, they refused to send me a new TP4T unit. However, after calling a second time and speaking with their customer service manager, they did send me a new TP4T unit and I replaced it on my EG340SC.
The new TP4T Tuner/preamp does work and I have tested it fully. Initially, I thought the TP4T was simply a cheap unit and did not work very well. It was difficult to use and I could not get the EG340SC tuned. It sounded terrible. I bought a Korg TM-40 Large Display Digital Tuner and Metronome along with a Korg CM-100L Clip On Contact Microphone For Tuners. Using the Korg TM-40 with the CM-100L, I was able to easily and quickly tune the EG340SC. In fact, it was quite fun to use the Korg TM-40! I also switched on the TP4T. I discovered the TP4T DID work correctly. For all 6 strings, the TP4T worked correctly and verified they were in tune. I could not use the new TP4T unit before because the instructions on Takamine's website are WRONG!!
"Tuner: The tuner in the TP4T is fully chromatic. Press the tuner switch to activate it. The note being played is shown in the digital display along with either an Up or Down arrow. If an Up arrow appears the note is sharp (too high) and needs to be lowered. If a Down arrow appears the note is flat (too low) and needs to be raised."
THIS IS WRONG!!! When the TP4T shows the UP ARROW, IT IS TELLING YOU TO RAISE THE NOTE (make the string higher)!!! When the TP4T shows the DOWN ARROW, IT IS TELLING YOU TO LOWER THE NOTE (make the string lower)!!! INCREDIBLE!!! I can't believe no one ever noticed this before!!! Just remember, you heard it from me first (a gratuity is expected).
The Takamine website is very poor. Their website instructions on how to remove the TP4T are also incomplete. They do not include the photographs they mention in their own instructions. In addition, NO instructions came with the Takamine guitar. In order to replace the TP4T tuner, you must unplug it from the inside of the guitar. This means you must loosen all the strings. As I was loosening the "G" string, #3, it broke. The only thing I knew about the included strings on the EG340SC is that they are D'Addario EXP's. However, because no documentation is included, I had no idea which of the EXP sets it was. I had to turn to the Internet to find out. D'Addario EXP16's are included on all Takamine 6 string steel guitars.
As you can see, I had a lot of trouble with this guitar. I came very close to returning it and almost did. However, I have worked out most problems and I will keep it. In fact, because of all problems I had with it, I probably know my EG340SC better than most other owners. The EG340SC still had a few issues. For the preamp, if I turn the gain up more than 40%, I will get distortion through the speakers from the lower 3 strings, E, A, D. When I plucked the A string, I got vibrations from the TP4T unit. These vibrations came from the bottom right side of the battery cover vibrating against of the body of the TP4T and also from the clear cover for the LED readout. A small, 1mm thick, stick-on felt pad underneath the right side of the battery cover so it extends around flush to the top of the cover solved this problem. See my pic's in the picture section for this product.
The "G" series Takamine guitars are made in China. I did not know this when I ordered. After having my EG340SC for 4 months, my philosophy has changed about this. If you don't want to pay three grand for a Martin or a Taylor, you can get one of the Chinese models and there are many good ones now. The Chinese have improved their production techniques. If you want to take trips with your guitar, do you really want to travel with an expensive guitar?
Materials included with Takamine G Series EG340SC Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
1. Limited Lifetime Warranty Registration Card
2. D'Addario EXP guitar string promo card (EXP16 set is strung with guitar)
3. Truss rod adjustment hex wrench, 4mm (0.153" or ~10/64")
NO instructions are included (none)
Overall, the Takamine EG340SC is a good learning guitar and I haven't owned a guitar in a long time.

fantastic guitar.. Feb 21, 2011
By akg15 i was searching for a couple of weeks for a guitar to start playing with as i just started taking lessons. i used my brothers martin sigma for a few weeks but decided i needed my own. i went to guitar center and was about to buy the fender 140ce black guitar..but decided against it last moment, and im glad i did. a few weeks later i was about to buy a seagull entourage black, but wasnt ready to drop 600 bucks on it and i was youtubing, i saw this guitar. i fell in love with the sound at first listen and then its looks. it has a nice pearl circle in the center with pearl dot inlays. it has mahogany back and sides and a spruce top. it looks great..and plays just as good..although it could use a tad more bass. the actions a little high, but can be adjusted. so far i love my guitar. between my brothers sigma and this, i would pick this guitar every time, even though it costs a fraction of the sigmas price.
Great guitar for the price Oct 13, 2011
By Jeff I purchasd this guitar for a backup so I wouldn't have to take my Martin D-28 to the jams that I attend weekly. I also thought it would be a good travel guitar for when my wife and I travel in our camper. It far exceeded my expectations. I love the built in tuner and it sounds great plugged in or unplugged. The cut away works perfectly for lead playing as well. You will definitely need to take it to a luthier for adjustment as the strings are further away from the neck as you go from the headstock; not sure why most guitars come this way, but my Martin didn't need adjustment when I purchased it. So expect to spend another $40 for the setup; still a good price for this guitar. I find a good test to play Barre chords and without the setup I'm still able to play barre chords cleanly with ease, but for lead work around the 12th fret I prefer a closer action. I still prefer to play my Martin but for $1500 plus less, it's a good second.
