Pure Portability: Taylor Guitar's Baby Taylor BT1 is Perfect for Travel and Little Hands

The Baby Taylor is the ultimate travel companion, delivering volume and tone that surprise for its diminutive dimensions. At three-quarters the size of a full-sized guitar, the Baby Taylor BT1 lives for the road. It also loves little hands, which makes it an irresistible choice for kids taking lessons. Available with either a solid spruce or solid mahogany top.

Part of an acoustic guitar’s appeal is its portability. Wherever you might
be headed, the compact Baby Taylor makes the perfect musical companion. Its debut over a decade ago set a new benchmark for players on the go, giving them a legitimate musical instrument that’s resilient and can truly carry a tune, all the way up the neck. It’s also perfectly kid-friendly.

Baby Taylor BT1 : The Little Dreadnought That Could

At a ¾-scale, the Baby Taylor BT1 is the little dreadnought that could. Taylor’s ultra-portable travel mate belies its size with a sweet, full voice and great tone. It’s remarkably versatile for special applications, whether played in alternate tunings or high-strung; with a capo or a slide. And it’s the perfect starter guitar for young kids.

4Surprisingly good!  Jan 17, 2011 By J. Rowland "JasonNYC"
Not too shabby at all. It really has a wonderful sound for such a small guitar. No, it doesn't have the bass response of larger and even some cheaper full size guitars but it sounds clean and bright and does the job when a big sound isn't required. Regarding the size of the frets and playing it, it is of course smaller and sometimes some chords seem a little bunched but then on some chords it is easier to play. Just depends on the size of your hands. The size can be both a plus and a negative. A plus when traveling or playing on the couch or in bed. A negative when wanting a bigger sound but it's not designed for performance although in the right application can easily sound good enough for certain performances. The action is a tiny high out of the factory compared to many guitars and that might turn off new players but it could be worse so no big deal. I personally love it but my hands aren't huge and I don't require a big sound. Great guitar for kids to learn on for sure although cheaper ones could be found without the same quality. It may be small and cheaper (minor corners have been cut to save money in the building process) than some Taylor guitars but it is still a Taylor and it sounds like one too and that's a wonderful thing for this little guy! :) Btw, it comes with a nice tan colored Taylor gig bag made just for the baby Taylor. AND, if this guitar is too small for you but you still want quality in a slightly smaller package you might want to look at the 15/16th sized big baby Taylor or even some parlor guitars. Just a thought.

Edit after one year:

It is still a very nice guitar and I don't regret buying it and much of what I originally stated above still applies. That said, I know a little bit more about guitars and learning guitar than I did before (mind you I am no professional and still learning so take that into consideration please) and I would like to add that I now do not recommend this guitar for most normal sized adults or even some adults with smaller hands, as a beginner guitar for the following reasons. One, it's a bit too small and cramped for learning many chords and for picking strings cleanly. This can lead to frustration, tension and sore hands and fingers beyond what normally happens with a beginner learning to play. Not to mention, the action is kinda high imho. Two, it's a bit more "pingy" or "twangy" sounding than I originally thought. Having used some nicer and full sized guitars since, I can say while this one is pretty darn nice for a 3/4 guitar, it's really not a "great" sound over all. After a year of using it, I would only suggest this guitar be purchased for adults with VERY small hands, children ages 7-12 or so depending on their size, and for those who NEED another smaller guitar for travel or some other reason. "Need" is the key word I think when considering this guitar.

5Perfect  Jun 09, 2011 By Robert J. Fries "Tubacarla"
As I have gotten older my fingers don't stretch as they used to. So while in Best Buy music dept. I decided to walk into a neat acoustic guitar room where they have their entire inventory to look at and sample. I wanted to try some smaller some smaller guitars. I picked up the Taylor Baby and was sold on it after strumming a few cords. Great sound, minimal action, simple but attractive and priced great for a Taylor, A richer sound then my my Ovation Applause. A real winner

3Bridge is coming up  Apr 15, 2011 By Addie Lambert
Purchase this from a local music store. I purchased one for my daughter in June of last year, and the bridge is already lifting from the guitar. We were told this is unusual for a Taylor, it is more common in a cheaper guitar. Our local music store would have replaced it if it was purchased there, but I wanted to save $50.... It has been well taken care of, yet it is now going to cost me $100.00 to get it fixed. The sound is great and she loves it.

5Baby arrived today :)  Mar 16, 2011 By M.
So, my Baby arrived today with a gig bag. It was awesome. I think I just fell in loved~! Baby Taylor is beautiful in every way imaginable, very detailed craftsmanship. It sounds bloody good and fits my hands really well, too. And the gig bag is really of high quality. The padding is thick and sturdy. It would protect the Baby well (though I'm thinking about getting the SKB case anyway for better protection). All in all a great guitar and a great gig bag. I'd recommend it to anyone :)

5Great travel size guitar that doesn't sacrifice playability.  Nov 13, 2010 By Brian B. "BB"
This guitar is fantastic for traveling (camping, parties, etc..) or if you have an idea that you want to get out of your head. I own five other guitars (EVH, PRS, Music Man, Gretsch, and Hofner) and this little guitar I probably play the most around the house. Great for when you are watching TV or just want to practice some licks. Keep an eye out for the intonation and staying in tune. Since the guitar has a shorter neck that sometimes makes the guitar go out of tune quickly. Since I have had mine, I haven't had any weird problems with keeping it in tune. If you have kids (younger age), and want to get them started playing guitar, this little guy would be perfect for him or her.

If you pick one up and play it, I am positive that you will enjoy the sound and playability of the guitar. Have fun.
