Read a real that makes this CD make sense (80's and 90's) May 04, 2009

There are many complaints about the style and quality of this CD. There is a reason for this....THE FIRST TIME....FOR THE LAST TIME is collection of demos a then-unknown Shania Twain recorded in the late 1980s and early 1990s for Canadian label Limelight Records. Written in collaboration with Los Angeles producer Paul Sabu, the songs here ... Full Descriptionare not country music, but rather well-crafted, energetically performed pop/rock fare. Though the production is often dated (particularly on the cruise-ship-dance-party-sounding "For the Love of Him" and the Laura Branigan-esque "It's Alright), the tracks definitely offer repeated glimpses of Twain's superstar potential. There are even a few country-tinged numbers ("Bite My Lip," "Luv Eyes") that presage Twain and Mutt Lange's multi-platinum Nashville/arena rock hybrids. Though recordings contained herein have been made available in several other forms, this package goes the extra mile by offering both the original recordings and significantly re-mixed/remastered versions on two different discs.

Folks - this is old Eileen Edwards... not current Shania Twain Oct 25, 2009
By Rochelle (mccabe12@juno.com) Before there was Shania Twain there was Eileen Edwards, trying to make music. Just like the 1962 Beatles didn't sound like the 1969 Beatles, and 1968 Stone Poneys Linda Ronstadt doesn't sound like 2009 Linda Ronstadt, you can't expect a young Eileen to sound like a polished Shania Twain. Give her a break! When someone with access scrapes together raw material from the cobwebs of an old recording studio, puts it into an "album" and releases it as Shania Twain's newest release, don't be so quick to judge - did you see any publicity about a new Shania Twain album/CD? No, because this is not a new Shania Twain CD (it's an old Eileen Edwards effort). But those of you who are criticizing the voice and style, remember what music sounded like in the 1980s. I happen to really like "Hate To Love", "The Heart Is Blind" and "Send It With Love", and think she had a very nice voice back then, but hadn't found her style yet. Hear the potential. True, most of the songs here are throwaways. But it's Shania "history" and should be given credit as such. Enjoy the embryonic Shania; just makes you appreciate what she became and gave us over the years. Listen to it again and pass over the ones that grate on your nerves. I'm glad I have this and hope she's making some money from the release of her old, primitive efforts. I bought the Limelight version put out by the producer several years ago; this is just another release in a different package, made to look like it's something new.

Nothing that screams buy me, or even listen to me Apr 27, 2009

I guess I should update an old review or two as in the past I seem to recall saying that I could listen to this lady sing words out of a phonebook or dictionary. Having sampled the songs from this collection, I have to admit that apparently you do have to have good song writers and need to be smart enough to work with a style that your customers will be able to find pleasing enough to spend their money on.
Nothing in this collection is offensive to me, but at the same time nothing here screams 'buy me' or even 'listen to me.' It just seems to be a jumble of songs that seem to be trying to offer pop stations something to play, though nothing in the mix even sounds all that appealing for that purpose either. Country fans will likely find nothing here to listen to, and given prior history with Shania Twain, that may be an incredibly easy stance to take. (In the past there have been plenty of negative reviewers of Shania Twain that find her insufferable because she has been too much of a pop/country-diva instead of being a hardcore traditional country artist.)
I was looking forward to this collection and hoping it would be a treat for my ears, instead I'm sad because these songs just don't hit the right notes for me.
Satisfactory demos Feb 27, 2010
By Patrick This is her demo material from the 80s. Her vocals are very good, but the music lacks any soul, it is obvious that the publisher is just trying to exploit her name. A true fan would love this album, I certainly do. The second disc is the original recordings and are MUCH better than the remixes. I would recomend this for any Shania fan trying to round out their collection. The booklet features pictures from her early career and a synopsis of her career, though there are errors. Don't worry, her new material shall be much better, but this is still a solid effort. Listen, then judge.

Oh my, what happened? May 12, 2009
By H I'm glad I read the other review that these songs were from a long time ago. I love her voice, I admire the life she has lived-raising her siblings & I loved her prior albums, but . . . this is not anything - pop or country - like she has done in the past. Before I read the other review about how this album was put together I thought she had gotten some very, very bad advice on what to put on this album. I preordered this, thinking she was back to her music after her divorce, but, you need to listen to the demo snip its they offer before you purchase it. I would not purchase it, I only hope she does do a new collection of work.
